Good morning Try Hards,

“The State of the Meta'' article this week was an interesting tool, showing us the distribution of factions across the weekend's main events. Now, I would like to do a Deep Dive into the best lists of the weekend to see what armies won their respective tournaments, which factions are out performing the others, and how all this relates to the distribution statistics. All of the tournaments analyzed were in person, 2k points, using the 2021 GW Event pack, and had at least 20 participants. In this article I'm going to document the top 5 placing factions from each event. and then take an in depth look at the winning list from each tournament so we can see if there are any trends or other interesting discoveries.

We know that imitation is the best form of flattery. In 40k the perception of strength (Taking the “best” units.) is the foundation for many players' list submission. While I will always advocate designing, owning, and knowing your own list custom fitted to your personal playstyle, I know that “Net Listing” is something that is prevalent in our hobby. Using this data, I hope that all of you will be better aware and better prepared for what to expect to see across the table at your next tournament.

Let’s talk about some interesting points.

1: Drukhari are still the top dogs.

With 7 top 5 finishes this weekend, and 9% of the total faction distribution, every player needs to be prepared for Drukhari. You are going to see them, and you are going to see them at top tables.

2: Some new dogs have joined the pack.

Orks, Grey Knights, Thousand Sons, and Sisters all had multiple top 5 finishes. All of these armies are “new codices” and should be considered top tier, final table calibur factions. Specifically Orks, I feel deserve a special shoutout. The Freebooterz orc list is REALLY good. In my opinion the biggest factor keeping this army from moving into the realm of knocking of Drukhari is the hobby lag aspect. Most of the models needed for this army are hard to get, and the army requires a lot of preparation to get it to the table. Expect to see more of these lists as people catch up.

3: Power Armor is still “Elite”

16 out of 40 top 5 finishers were some variety of power armor. Marines still have value. The Volkite Contemptor is one of the most efficient offensive units in the game. Combine that with Transhuman, one of the best defensive abilities in the game and Marine builds still have a lot of positive play.

4: Do Tyranids have play?

2 top five finishes for mono nids, and a first place finish for forces of the hive mind. Being the best performing faction still on an 8th edition book, the Tyranid faction is one to focus a deep dive on in the near future.

5: What happened to all the Necrons?

Necrons were the third highest represented faction at 6.5% of the total distribution. The fact that they didn't have a single top five finish is both unfortunate, and telling of their place in the current Meta. Maybe the fact that they have such a clear cut top build (Obsec, pre game move,) just doesn't match up to the factions at the top table, or maybe a bit of codex creep (weapon profiles and point costs have been overlapped by most of the newer codices.) Especially the point cost makes trading efficiently almost impossible.

Either way, Necrons are popular, but just seem to be on the outside looking in.
