Grim Dark Roundup 9/17-9/19

It’s The Butcher, I’m back for another week's analysis of the current competitive 40k tournament meta. I have gathered together faction distribution information from all of last week's big tournaments so we can see a snapshot of what our current “Meta” looks like. To make our list, you have to be an “in person event” with at least 20 active players, playing at the 2,000 point level, and your event has to be featured on the best Coast Pairings App. I looked at 13 events from around the world with almost 450 players this week. Check out the following table for the data.

The first thing I notice is that the top 8 factions out of 40 represented, account for about half of the total number of players. You will also notice later in this article that all 8 of these factions recorded a top finish for the weekend. It’s safe to say that these 8 factions, (Death Guard, Drukhari, Thousand Sons, Sisters, Grey Knights, Necrons, Ad Mech, and Orks) are starting to pull themselves away and establish themselves as the top of the “Meta”. These are the armies that you need to have some familiarity with and practice against.

Secondly, I am seeing an increase in soup lists this week over last week. 39 soup lists equates to about 9% of the total population. Most of these lists involve armies still on 8th edition books. GW tends to be pushing us away from soup in 9th edition, but there still may be merits in combining some of the “weaker” factions to shore up areas where they need help with another faction.

Thirdly, Chaos, as a broad faction, is still very popular, even though they haven't seen much 9th edition love. 47 chaos list, not including Tsons and Death Guard. If you add all three of those together, 25% of the lists swear allegiance to the dark gods. If Chaos marines get their second wound, I expect this number to grow exponentially.

Next I want to look at the results from the weekend.

So, Ad Mech was still king this weekend. With the most top finishes, the power of the Mechanicus still haunts the top tables. Grey Knights and Thousand Sons assert their psychic dominance, and Orks are showing how powerful the newest codex can be. 26 out of 41 lists did fall into the category of the top 8 represented factions we discussed earlier.

I also noticed that Drukhari only had 2 top performances and was the second most popular faction. Does this mean their reign of terror is over? Something to talk about. I will say I appreciate that there is not one faction as a single outlier here dominating every tournament. Is it possible we are on the way to some sort of parity at the top?

Next for you I have the top 3 from each tournament analyzed (top 5 for Iron Halo) This week we are also doing a live analysis of one list from each tournament on Discord Tuesday night. This way we can talk about what each meta faction list could look like, and wrap our heads around how to tackle it.
